option 3
DPD's dedicated Olympics Project Team was formed last year to ensure that they are ready to respond to the challenges created by this summer's Olympic and Paralympic Games. Those preparations are now well underway and DPS are in a position to share a detailed action plan with our customers.
It is clear from their close liaison with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and Transport for London (TfL) that they are likely to experience severe congestion in a number of areas in and around London from mid July to mid September, although we expect there will also be disruption outside those dates due to the Torch Relay, testing of the Olympic transport infrastructure and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
There are many statistics associated with both events that help explain the scale of the congestion:
- 24 Olympic venues across London
- 800,000 spectators on peak day
- 10,500 athletes
- 9,000,000 tickets sold
- 21,000 press people in attendance
- 3,000,000 additional transport trips on the busiest day
Olympics and Paralympics 2012: Reasons for disruption
The following list will help you to understand the full extent of the disruption to collections and deliveries:
- There will undoubtedly be congestion in and around all 24 London venues
- The Olympic Route Network is 109 miles in length and incorporates the main thoroughfare through London
- The road events themselves, such as the Marathon, of which there are 10, will include a number of road closures from the day before and day of the event
- There are a number of parallel events such as the Diamond Jubilee and the Concerts at Buckingham Palace, at which there is likely to be 60,000 spectators
- Increased security at all venues will incorporate a number of road restrictions
- The movement of athletes to and from all venues
- Park & Ride traffic
- There is no parking for spectators at the venues
- Parking restrictions will be in place around the venues affecting 290,000 homes
- During the games 200,000 members of the Olympic family (athletes, coaches, officials and technicians) will require transport to and from the venues daily.
- There will be suspensions of numerous parking and waiting bays
- Creation of Games Lanes, which will be reserved for VIP traffic
- Numerous right hand turns will be taken out of the traffic system

DPD have a detailed plan to ensure that our deliveries and collections are successful throughout this period. However, please note that they will be unable to access certain 'lockdown venues', since they will be closed to all general traffic. Click here for information on deliveries into the 'lockdown venues'
DPD's action plan will include:
- opening an additional facility near their London Bridge depot before commencement of the Games
- increasing the number of routes operating from their London depots
- providing drivers with assistants who will make the final delivery on foot (this will not apply to lockdown venues)
- introducing early AM deliveries and late PM deliveries
- having the option of switching parcel traffic from affected depots to alternative depots
- increasing the number of depot/customer service staff to enable customers to collect their parcels
- appointing an Olympic Specialist in all affected depots, who will coordinate their action plan
- providing daily updates on their position in London throughout the whole of the Games
DPD has and will continue to invest a significant amount of money to ensure that service levels are maintained to the best of their abilities in and around the impacted areas. They cannot absorb these costs and will be introducing a surcharge for deliveries into the Olympic congestion zone area. They will do everything to keep these charges to a minimum and will confirm the exact amounts and the relevant postcodes by early May.
In order to help you create your own contingency plans for this period, we have produced a matrix which outlines the specific dates and postcodes that will be impacted.
Please note: for red and amber postcodes on the above matrix, the following services will be suspended for the duration of the Games: Before 10, Before 12, Saturday Before 10, Saturday Before 12, Swap it Before 10 and Swap it Before 12. Green postcodes indicate normal service will continue.
What is a 'lockdown venue'?
A lockdown venue is a secure Olympic site where, for security reasons, normal access is strictly controlled. There are over 50 lockdown venues in London and at other Olympic venues; they include everything from the main Olympic stadium to hotels used by officials.
Access for parcel delivery has been exclusively granted to the official logistics supplier, UPS. All parcels delivered by UPS into these sites will be subject to the UPS delivery charge and a security surcharge.
A list of lockdown venues can be viewed by clicking here.
Deliveries into lockdown venues

We would suggest that you conduct a review of your shipping history with CleverBoxes to the impacted areas and compare it against the matrix above and then ask the following questions:
- Do I need to ship the order during this timeframe; can I send it earlier?
- Can I send the shipment to an alternative address outside of the Olympic congestion zone during the period of disruption?
- Can I ask the receiver to collect from their local DPD depot?
If you have any questions please call 01254 238 749 and selection option 3
